News from ANZSGM conference

AAG’s President Dr Claudia Meyer and CEO Ms Renu Borst were in Brisbane recently, to attend the annual conference of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Geriatric Medicine (ANZSGM). Here, Claudia reports on the event.

‘It was wonderful to meet up with several geriatricians who are also AAG members, and to make new acquaintances.

The Welcome to Country was a fabulous opening to the conference. The program was vibrant, showcasing the complexity and multi-disciplinary nature of supporting older people. A lively debate featured whether pharmacotherapy was the answer for dementia, clinical updates were provided, and numerous diverse oral presentations around innovative models and social aspects of care. An update of Indigenous-focused research and practice, including for Māori and Torres Strait Islander communities, and a chance to stretch our vocal cords during ‘The Arts: Ageing, Health and Wellbeing’ symposium.

Congratulations to Vasi Naganathan on the completion of his term as president of the Society. We look forward to an ongoing close association with Rob O’Sullivan as the incoming president. Here I am with Vasi (left) and Rob (right).

In 2030, AAG is co-hosting the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG) World Congress with ANZSGM and New Zealand Association of Gerontology (NZAG). This collaboration – and the event itself – provide great momentum to build our gerontology and geriatric communities.

We thank the ANZSGM for their warm welcome and hospitality.’

AAG Research Trust Hal Kendig grants now open

The AAG Research Trust is pleased to announce that the Hal Kendig Research Development Program is now open for applications.

This grant program commemorates the work and memory of Emeritus Professor Hal Kendig, a highly distinguished scholar who dedicated his life and career to gerontology, and a Life Member of AAG. Hal was a generous supporter of early researchers, and this grant is made possible by a generous donation from his family.

In 2023, this grant program offers up to two grants of up to $20,000 each, for projects of up to 18 months’ duration. Details on the grant conditions and application process are on the AAG Research Trust pages of the AAG website. While you’re there, be inspired by new additions to the awardee showcase, which shares, promotes and celebrates the work undertaken by previous grant recipients.

Applications close at 8.00 am AEST on Monday 24 July 2023.
